Plastic pollution on the world's coral reefs.
New research published in the prestigious journal Nature has shed light on the pervasive problem of plastic pollution affecting almost all coral reefs worldwide. This groundbreaking study, conducted by a team of scientists from Nekton, California Academy of Sciences, and the universities of São Paulo, Oxford, and Exeter, represents the most comprehensive survey of plastic pollution on coral reefs ever conducted.
The researchers surveyed a total of 84 shallow and deep reefs across 25 locations in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian oceans. Their findings were deeply concerning, as debris over 5cm in size was found at 77 out of the 84 reefs surveyed, even in near-pristine locations such as uninhabited atolls in the central Pacific. Astonishingly, the study revealed that deeper reefs were more polluted than their shallow counterparts.
Plastic waste accounted for a staggering 88% of the debris found, with nearly three quarters of the identified items (73%) being fishing gear. Plastic pollution has far-reaching negative impacts on coral reefs, ranging from the spread of coral diseases to the entanglement and damage of reef structures, which subsequently reduces fish abundance and diversity. According to lead author Hudson Pinheiro, PhD, from the University of São Paulo, "Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing problems plaguing ocean ecosystems, and coral reefs are no exception."

Deep Reefs Conservation

A new study led by scientists from Nekton, the Western Indian Ocean and University of Oxford recently published in the journal, Conservation Letters, confirms for the first time that deep reef habitats, notably in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO), are largely unprotected despite being under threat from a multitude of stressors, including overfishing, pollution, climate change and, in the near fut...

Memo to COP27 from the Maldives. Subject: Act Now
Переглядів 288 тис.Рік тому
If your homeland is running out of fresh water and empty plastic water bottles wash up on the shore from half a world away, the stakes are high for what world leaders can accomplish at the COP27 climate summit. The message we heard on our recent Nekton Maldives Mission was clear: Act Now - before it's too late.

When a young marine biologist on the frontline of the climate crisis tells you coral reefs cannot survive and neither can her native land unless world leaders at COP 27 reduce carbon emissions, you stop and pay attention. Nekton met Aya Naseem on its recent mission to the Maldives - her message is stark.

We need to go back to natural fibres like wool, cotton, linen, and limit synthetic fibres. Where possible, sewerage-treatment plants, should discharge treated water, inland (if microplastics can't be removed,) and use this water to grow timber. Egypt is using partially treated seweage water to create a green-belt in the desert.

Haha the climate will reduce the Maledives coral! What a fraud, this is the reason: “Coral rock is the main aggregate for most construction purposes in Maldives. In 1986 the demand for coral aggregate for the construction industry in Malé Atoll, the industrial center of the country, was estimated at 0.5 million cubic feet/year. Although no recent estimates have been made, it is thought that demand is probably at its limit now and according to predictions, the current methods of mining would exhaust the coral buildings in N. Malé Atoll within a maximum of 30 years if coral mining is not controlled. There are many problems associated with the current mining practices.”

Acropora are one of the faster growing corals other than Pocillopora or Seriatopora so re-growing the reef from those should be fast. From what I have experienced you can see a thumb sized frag grow to a fist sized colony in 12 months and that's just in captivity, in the wild they achieve even better growth rates.

Corals will not be reduced by 90%, corals like warm water, what is this woman talking about, certainly not facts, The great barrier reef, largest reef system is now grown to maximum coral coverage in 30 years, so explain how that can be as your groups have been screaming doom and gloom for over 30 years, a little warming is probably great for the planet as 10x climate deaths are because of death from hypothermia, the Maldives are doing great, population and housing has grown enormously in the ladt 30 yesrs, i guess all those immigrants don’t think their houses will sink into the oceans, your just after funding, is it just me tired of listening to 100% false claims, ?

34 years ago the environment minister of the Maldives, backed by global scientists, assured us the islands would be abandoned by now if CO2 levels did not reduce In the past 34 years, CO2 rate of rise has continuously accelerated stopping not even for a 10% reduction of global CO2 output during covid, and yet the population of the Maldives has doubled and banks are lending heavily to build sea front resorts there. So is this latest warning a repeat of a previous one we should ignore, or was the previous one a mistake and the new one is real, and should the banks be told that lending money to build sea front resorts is bad investing policy ? QUOTE In September 1988, the Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported a “gradual rise in average sea level is threatening to completely cover this Indian Ocean nation of 1196 small islands within the next 30 years,” based on predictions made by government officials. Then-Environmental Affairs Director Hussein Shihab told AFP “an estimated rise of 20 to 30 centimetres in the next 20 to 40 years could be ‘catastrophic’ for most of the islands, which were no more than a metre above sea level.” The article went on to suggest the Maldives, along with its 200,000 inhabitants, could “end” sooner than expected if drinking water supplies dry up by 1992 “as predicted.” Today, more than 417,000 people live in the Maldives.

I mean if it's a discovery just for the sake of governance i don't get it. And what sort of policy? What food for future? I don't get this one thing, we are already doing more harm than good in the name of science, so that some folks can satiate their hunger for curiosity... Why aren't we trying to work on undo things? Now since you have discovered this hotspot, Maldivian govt gonna fish and export for their economy. What good it's doing to the nature?

    • @himmel-erdeundzuruck5682
      @himmel-erdeundzuruck5682 Рік тому

Maldivians don't only fish for export, their basic food is tuna and coconut. So they depend on fisheries far beyond trade. And they live right on these reefs, while the climate changes and their home is very far endangered. Maldives can't survive without this reef being intact. But other nations just do ignore it. India e.g. does industrial net-fishing again and again, even in Maldivian waters. Maldivians only do line-fishing, which doesn't harm so much. On climatic conferences, they try to convince the whole world to respect nature. But to meet Indian economic interests, and to meet the climatic stubbornness of western nations, Maldivians just need scientific knowledge, knowledge that proves, that they aren't neglegible or hysteric. That's the reason of research in Maldives. That's the reason, why their president Solih himself invited the Necton project. It is not only curiosity, it is the will of a tiny nation to survive.

I watched half the video by now and I still don't know what they are talking about... I would want to know first in the video. 1. What is "Nekton" 2. What is Nektons purpose/what are they trying to achieve. 3. What is "The trapping Zone". The "importance of the project" and "who will benefit from it" can be added later in the video when viewers know what the project is all about. Although the title was very good and eye-catching

Nekton is a project of the university of Oxford for maritime research. Here they are in Maldives. Maldives, inspite of having thousands of PADI-divers every day, don't really know anything about their reefs. So, according to this video, the maldivian president Solih invited them to do research on the Maldivian reef. Maldives are situated on a reef of about 4 km height - under sealevel. Now they investigated at least the first kilometer and learned a lot about the life within the reef in lower regions.
